Word and Image /Word as Image.
Words and image /Word as image has been
used for many years, it’s a conventional way of combining both words and images
into one singular word/image. The most common are that word as image is used is
in graffiti. Graffiti is a way expressing images/words on a public surface such
as bus stops, bridges etc. Many people see graffiti as a form of vandalism
whereas other people view graffiti as a piece of art. Graffiti consists of precise
yet unconventional forms of lettering, some artists include images within their
work. A great example of word as image graffiti is world renowned Banksy.
Banksy's identity is unknown but his/her work most definitely isn't. This is an
example of a piece of Banksy artwork:
Incorporating both lettering and image into
his/her work gives this piece of graffiti meaning. It allows the viewer to
connect with it on a level which wouldn’t be possible without either the
lettering or the image. Both the lettering and image compliment each other and
allows the viewer to understand Banksy's reasoning behind his/her work.
This is my attempt at trying to connect the
bridge between word and image within one drawing. As you can see I have gone
with a very simplistic design, I have gone with a similar style to Banksy's
piece of work in the picture above. My message I am trying to convey is that
everyone has their dreams but there will always be someone that is trying to
destroy them as they may be jealous of your dreams. Also the imagine that most
dreams are in your mind until you put them into action (dream in the thought
bubble) yet there will be someone to try and 'pop' your dreams (person with a
needle). This was a very quick, simple design that I put together based on
personal experiences. I believe it’s a powerful message that I am putting
across too.
